Lily List--scroll down to see individual varieties Lilies provide an easy to grow, colorful addition to your garden and landscape. If you plant several different varieties, you can enjoy blooms from June through August. These hardy bulbs require only minimal care. Each has the capacity to eventually grow into a large cluster of flowering stems. Planting and Care: Though lilies look like they'd be fussy plants, they are actually very easy to grow. They're not particular about soil type or pH and they grow well in full or part sun, dappled or light shade. Plant 4-6” deep for most varieties. Most important tip: Lilies MUST HAVE GOOD DRAINAGE!!Types of Lilies: Asiatic Lilies start the season in June. Most have upward-facing flowers and all are hardy in zones 4 to 9. Most are not fragrant. They are long blooming and produce many flowers on one stem, often with intense colors. They are excellent in perennials beds. Oriental Lilies bloom in July. They are intensely fragrant, with huge, flat blossoms that can be up to 10 inches across. Oriental Lilies are fabulous in the garden or in a vase. Oriental Trumpet Lily (OT--also called Orienpet) is a hybrid created from Trumpet lilies and Oriental lilies. The result has the best qualities of its parents: upward-facing blooms, improved vase life, improved disease resistance, and intense fragrance. LA Lilies–-LA lilies were created by crossing Longiflorums (Trumpet) with Asiatics. These lilies have larger buds than Asiatics and can be recognized by their dense clusters. LA lilies generally do not have any fragrance. Flowers are extremely long lasting and the thicker petals are more weather resistant. Trumpet Lily--Trumpet lilies grow very tall and have large, trumpet-shaped flowers. They are very fragrant. The immense size and weight of the flowers may require some staking when in bloom. They need well-drained soil and full sun. The best known Trumpet lily is the Easter lily.

'Black Beauty' has tightly recurved petals that are dark raspberry pink and lightly fragrant, blooming on very tall 48 to 60" stems in mid to late August. Hall Of Fame winner. Black Beauty is even more prized for its wonderful vigor and long life in all sorts of gardens. These are the easiest lilies to cultivate; they multiply readily and bloom over a long season. A mature bulb can have up to 40 buds. Full sun. |

Full sun is best, so stems don't need staking. Blooms in August. They are also occasionally called Orienpets. This one has really large blooms and they last for weeks--Laurie said each bloom lasted a month on her plant last year. Full sun to partial shade, may need to be staked in heavier shade. |
